Firstly, apologies for this very late update, no excuses I was just busy! But that’s it! Windows 7 is now fully deployed into the operational environment within Data#3. All users have had their installs completed by our Project Sponsor’s requested date of 09/09/09, albeit a few stragglers that can’t be done at this stage due to vendor specific software currently in use that can’t be supported under Windows 7 at this stage or users that are out on customers’ site and are unable to connect to the Data#3 domain.

The installs went in fairly easily but you can read the full technical update from Shaun Duncan for any technical issues that he came across.

My main issue, if you can actually call it an issue, was with the users install scheduling. Some users either did not accept any installation date from their choice of nine offered and not offering an alternative, or users accepting all nine options?!?!, but most users were able to have their installations completed on or around their proposed date.

Thank you everybody for following the Data#3 migration to Windows 7. I hope this blog has proven interesting or beneficial to you especially if you are thinking of installing Windows 7 in your workplace.

Take care, Drew Logie

The dedicated followers of our project, through this blog will have noticed that I am the second Project Manager who has been assigned to its delivery. As with projects delivered in the real world the Project Manger can change as is the case for project. Importantly, what processes and procedures do we have in place to mitigate this risk? Our Project Managers are fully trained in our home grown Predictor methodology which greatly assists in transitioning Project Managers mid project. We took this opportunity to monitor the effectiveness of this approach and to date it has been effective with a few small issues that are now solved and rolled into our processes. As you know success is a journey, not a destination.

You will have read this project is of great importance to Data#3 where the same governance is applied throughout the lifecycle of this project as is applied to any other project. Customers are customers, whether they be internal or external, to Data#3 it is irrelevant. Sometimes delivering to an internal customer is more difficult due to the associated ‘mateship’. This is something that is always at the forefront of every Project Manager’s mind.

You may have also read through Shaun Duncan’s recent blog entry this week that we are currently in Week 2 of Production Deployment. Allocating users to a choice of nine timeslots over three days seems to be a good way of managing the allocation of the installations. No major issues have been raised, which is good testament to the rigorous testing prior to the rollout.

Hi, I’m Drew Logie and no I am neither related to the TV awards or Gold . I have been in the IT industry for a long time and have a self-taught, solid and pragmatic approach to customers’ needs, requirements and expectations.

I begun selling IT hardware a very long time ago, moved into the building & configuration of bespoke desktops and servers and then into IT hardware engineering – I have come up through the ranks so to speak.

After approximately ten years I moved to a new IT company to develop/enhance my engineering knowledge – I witnessed first-hand back then how projects were being delivered and became a technical resource and helped to deliver projects. The day became more interesting as it was away-from-the-norm and I soon became interested in the organisational process and governance of project delivery.

I believe most Project Managers become PM’s by accident, but I displayed an interest in wanting to move into project management. With the backing of an understanding manger I was given the opportunity to manage a small internal project. I was hooked and never looked back!

All these years on, I’m still managing IT projects and thoroughly enjoy it! I always get a kick out of bringing all the pieces of the jigsaw together, taking customers’ ideas through to reality and implementing these ideas. Every project is taken personally and I stand by the concept of ‘Think of yourself as a customer’

Managing the delivery of this high profile and special project of deploying Windows 7 internally to Data#3 is an honour. To deploy a new SOE into a Production environment prior to its official launch has to be exciting, yes?

Thanks & Regards
