<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.35pt;line-height:16.8pt;background: white"><span style="font-family:" lang="EN-AU">Ok so to kick things off, studies have been conducted around the environment of screen resolution settings. These environments are almost the first ports of<br />
call for users who prefer to read their content close up. In fact some studies have revealed that over </span><strong><span lang="EN-AU"><span style="color: #666699;">55%</span></span></strong><span style="font-family:" lang="EN-AU"> of users set their resolutions to a lower setting even if their<br />

<p class="MsoNormal" style="LINE-HEIGHT: 16.8pt; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 6.35pt; BACKGROUND: white"><span style="color: #ff6600;"><strong><span lang="EN-AU">This quote comes from </span></strong><strong><span style="font-size: 12pt;" lang="EN-AU">Engineering</span></strong><strong><span lang="EN-AU"> Windows 7 site, published September 13, 2008:</span></strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.35pt;line-height:16.8pt;background: white"><em><span style="color:#92D050" lang="EN">We don&#8217;t have a way of knowing for sure why users adjust their screen resolution down, but many of the<br />
comments we’ve seen match our hypothesis that a lot of people do this to because they have difficulty reading default text on high resolutions<br />
displays.  With that said, some users probably stumble into this configuration by accident; for example due to a mismatched display driver or an<br />
application that changed the resolution for some reason but did not change it back.</span></em></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.35pt;line-height:16.8pt;background: white"><span style="font-family:">So with all this revelation about screens and resolutions what are you using? Well it’s very likely that you’re using a high dot per inch (DPI) type display. If you<br />
are still working on <strong>Windows XP</strong>, or <strong>Windows Vista </strong>you’re also not getting the best resolutions and settings out of your monitor.<br />
Do you always squint to read text and then quickly change to a lower resolution to accommodate? <strong><span style="color: #3366ff;">Stop this!</span></strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:6.35pt;line-height:16.8pt;background: white"><span style="font-family:">With <strong>Windows 7</strong>, you will not have to worry about this issue. Building on top of the improvements already made to support high DPIs in Windows Vista, <strong>Windows 7</strong> is set to make<br />
changing DPIs as intuitive and as “safe” as changing resolutions.</span><span style="font-family:">Just to take it one step further, <strong>Windows 7</strong> will even choose the most appropriate or <strong><em>recommended </em></strong>DPI for you when you install</span><span style="font-family:"> </span></p>
<p> <strong><span style="font-family:" lang="EN"><span style="color:#0070C0">Make the text on your screen larger or smaller</span></span></strong></p>

<p>You can make the text and other items, such as icons, on your screen easier to see by making them larger. You can do this without changing the screen resolution<br />
of your monitor or laptop screen. This enables you to <strong>increase</strong> or <strong>decrease </strong>the size of text and other items on your screen while keeping your monitor or laptop set to its optimal resolution.</p>

And at this point, I can say, <strong>YES</strong>! The <strong>OS</strong> makes good use of system resources. Things such as memory or drive space, CPU calculations and GPU processing. </span></span></span><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">However, if you’re like me when it comes to making a machine work harder, then this post will interest you.<br />

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><strong><br />
The little extra tweaks that will push your PC further:</strong></span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><strong><span style="COLOR: #7030a0; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Hardware Boost Item 1:</span></span></span></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">From a hardware perspective, and the only significant upgrade that by far is the easiest item financially to push onto an older machine, is to see how much extra memory you can slot onto that motherboard. </span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU">Dropping those <strong>1Gig</strong> chips perhaps and upgrading them to <strong>2Gig</strong> chips or trying to fill all slots will improve things alot.<br />
This may seem obvious, but <strong>remember </strong>the basics of computer engineering<strong> –</strong> </span><strong><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU" lang="EN-US">Random Access Memory</span></strong><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU" lang="EN-US"> (<strong>RAM</strong>) provides space for your computer to read and write data to be accessed by the <strong>CPU</strong> (<strong>central processing unit</strong>). If you add more <strong>RAM</strong> to your computer, you reduce the number of times your CPU must read data from your hard disk. This usually enables your computer to work considerably faster, as RAM is many times faster than a hard disk.</span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><strong><span style="COLOR: red; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">WARNING:</span></span></strong><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU"><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">If your PC is old, then finding RAM for it might be a tad hard, and also the sliding cost scale turns dramatically upwards. <strong>Why?</strong> </span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">Because older memory models chipsets are harder to find and support and so they become like little pieces of gold sitting in your friendly village PC shops through-away bin. Hunt them down and install.<br />
</span></span><strong><span style="COLOR: #7030a0; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU"><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">Hardware Boost Item 2:</span></span></span></strong></p>

Now in my previous post, </span><strong><span style="COLOR: black; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU">How to get your company ready for Windows 7</span></strong><span style="COLOR: black; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-ansi-language: EN-AU; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-language: EN-AU">, I mentioned there a significant tool that will help you understand what devices drivers and hardware are lacking newer software drivers and incompatibilities with <strong>Windows 7</strong>. The ripple effect rolls from here into the <strong>Malware</strong> arena.<br />
<strong>Malware</strong> is an application. So it doesn&#8217;t get privileges to run in order to compromise your <strong>Vista/WIN7</strong> operating system, because the UAC controls the access.</span></span></p>

I was wondering what the buzz was all about regarding this new technology used to lock USB sticks. So I thought I would have a go at this new feature called <strong>BitLocker To Go! </strong>And this is what I came up with.</span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><strong></strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><strong><span style="font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;; color: #0070c0; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;" lang="EN-US"><span style="font-size: x-small;">History Lesson 101</span></span></strong></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">Once upon time, in the land of <em>smoke and mirrors</em>, when Microsoft Windows was still in NT nappies. There was a special encryption technology available to those users who knew about it and that decided not to use it in case things went bad and only was available for folders.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span><br />
This technology was called <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">EFS</strong> (<strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Encrypting File System</strong>). </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">Over a short epoch, the knights of the Windows NT table got more robust and so Windows Vista become king &#8211; for a year or so…<br />
Its reign, although short-lived, has produced some fruit in the form of a <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Full-Disk Encryption Technology</strong>.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span lang="EN-US">It was called </span><strong><span style="font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;; color: black; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;" lang="EN-US">BitLocker</span></strong><span lang="EN-US">. The name, although undecided for awhile, was actually called </span><strong><span style="font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;; color: black; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;" lang="EN-US">Full Volume / Drive Encryption </span></strong><span lang="EN-US">(</span></span></span><strong><span style="line-height: 115%; font-family: Chiller; color: #ffc000; font-size: 22pt; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';" lang="EN-US">Gripping!</span></strong><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">); however, the name, B.I.T.L.O.C.K.E.R, was far more gritty and noble.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span lang="EN-US">Now, in </span><strong><span style="font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;; color: black; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;" lang="EN-US">Windows 7 RC</span></strong><span lang="EN-US">, its soon be crowned successor, things have moved up a belt notch. Now, not only can this technology lock down a full drive partition but removable storage devices too. </span></span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"> <span style="font-family: Verdana;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span lang="EN-US">It has been estimated that at least </span><strong><span style="font-family: &quot;Verdana&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;; color: black; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: Verdana;" lang="EN-US">50,000</span></strong><span lang="EN-US"> laptops are stolen each year in Australia – that is one every 10 minutes. Therefore, you should take extreme care in hotels, airport lounges and conference venues &#8211; thieves target places such as these. </span></span></span></p>

So with that in mind, <span style="color: #7030a0;">BitLocker To Go</span> is designed primarily for enterprises and for users on the move. </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">It also provides protection to the company when there is a risk of a guest<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>or outside user bringing an unprotected storage device into the corporate environment &#8211; copying important corporate information with intention or not. </span></span></p>

<p><strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Installation:</strong> The installation procedure was fast and furious – in less than 35 minutes I was back up and connected to my network. No seriously!</p>
<p>With very few information request prompts – the install process just got on with it and finished – but I mean <strong>FINISHED</strong> the install.<br />
- <strong>No</strong> reboots!<br />
- <strong>No</strong> “just one moment please&#8230;while we circumnavigate the globe in search of extra terrestrial updates and <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">hotfixes for your new installation</em></strong>, or a gazillion seconds go by to configure. &#8221;<br />

As a Support Specialist this is great and proves to me that Windows 7 has the punch to roll out fine!<br />
Users on networks whether home, small business to large corporates won’t be delayed or bogged down with unnecessary info prompts.<br />
And they won’t be <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">INACTIVE</strong> longer than it takes to drink a good sized cappuccino. </span></span></p>

This encourages me as many basic PC users don’t understand the beginners of the build cycle.<br />
They don’t know what to undelete, or partition, or how much to partition by. This really takes the guess work out of the process here.</span></span></p>
